Everyday fantasy, layered in colour and narrative
I live everyday life as a fantasy.
In my early childhood, surrounded by constraints, creating imaginary worlds was the only freedom I had.
The ordinary everyday life that most people take for granted was something entirely absent from my world—unreachable, yet beautiful.
Today, I live inside that very world I once only dreamed of.
The fantasy I have carved out through my own will serves as a filter for rediscovering the wonder of daily life.
The years spent abroad—in Melbourne and beyond—street performances, the fascinating people I met along the way, the landscapes I witnessed, and the experiences etched deep into my heart all became my home.
Along the way, I encountered illness, an unwelcome reality. Yet even in the midst of facing mortality, my way of looking toward the continuation of a dreamed-of everyday life never wavered. It was, in every moment, what kept me connected to freedom.
The reason so many animals appear in my work is that their presence and movements speak simply and directly of how life is lived.
For instance, my beloved dog playing innocently with other dogs carries within that scene a shimmer of society and life that is, to me, an essential source of inspiration.
The moving moments I experience in daily life are rewritten within me as fantasy—sometimes borrowing the form of another animal, sometimes as landscape. Fragments of life and the world before me are seen through my own filter and playfully drawn out.
As a story of meeting the ordinary, the taken-for-granted, anew.
I will continue to paint this world.
